Housing & Public Works Department Update Wuikinuxv First Nation | Prepared May 2026
Staffing: We are pleased to announce that a new Housing & Public Works Manager has been hired! Jordan Koe will be joining the Administration team on June 8, 2026, and we are excited to welcome Jordan to the team. A Housing Committee Meeting is scheduled for June 11, 2026 to introduce Jordan to the community and provide further updates on housing matters. We look forward to seeing you there.
Housing Waitlist & Applications: The Housing Committee uses a housing application matrix to evaluate applicants, prioritizing those at risk of homelessness or without permanent residency in the village.
If you have not previously submitted a housing application, please submit one before the end of June. This will allow the department, with the Housing Committee's support, to complete a full review and revise the waitlist for the fall. This is especially important as the Nation currently has an Expression of Interest submitted to support bringing more homes into the community. An up-to-date waitlist will help ensure we are well-positioned to demonstrate housing need. To obtain an application, please reach out to housing_manager@wuikinuxv.net. Following Committee review, recommendations will go to Chief and Council for final approval.
New Housing Units: The Committee agreed to submit an Expression of Interest for additional housing units. Options under consideration include two additional triplexes (valued for their faster construction timelines and lower costs), larger homes for families, and smaller/tiny home units for singles and elderly residents. Parking, yard space, and accessibility for multi-level units remain active discussion points.
In the coming months, the department will be meeting with the community to update our understanding of housing needs and to build a multi-year housing plan that supports growth and new development for Wuikinuxv Nation.
Capital Renovation Program: The Housing Committee has made a recommendation to Chief & Council to commit $1,200,000 in Own Source Revenue (OSR) to support the Nation's application with Indigenous Services Canada's Housing Support Program. This funding will help advance Phase 1 of the renovation program, which covers 18 homes in the community. The Request for Proposals (RFP) for this project will be issued mid- to late June, with construction anticipated to begin in early August 2026. We are also currently working on Phase 2 housing applications, with Phases 2 and 3 to follow for remaining band-owned, private, and rent-to-own properties. The Nation has also secured 2026 CMHC RRAP funding and was successful with two energy retrofit grant programs, with ISC funding contingent on the Nation confirming its own financial contribution.
Tenancy & Arrears: Ann Evangelista will be visiting the community June 9–12 to meet with tenants regarding tenancy agreements and rental arrears. If you are a tenant in the community, please check your email and mailbox for notices regarding your appointment. You can schedule time with Ann directly by emailing ann@6hats.ca. An arrears review is also underway ahead of the 2026 budget, with the Nation moving forward on collection and enforcement to protect its ability to access lending institutions.
If you have any questions about your rent or tenancy agreement, you are encouraged to reach out by email at housing_manager@wuikinuxv.net
